Bird Watching

Buffy_Fish_Owl Black_eagle fulvousbreasted_woodpecker

The most bird activity at the Eco-Lodge is between the hours of 6 – 7 am where many local birds can be seen and heard around the property.

The people of Sarinbuana have declared this area as a “No catching animal zone”, due to its proximity to one of the two remaining rainforests in Bali. An area of 1,800 ha is dedicated to preserve nature. You may see locals with rifles – locals are permitted to defend their crops from squirrels (of which there are many) who make an annoying number of holes in their cacao pods – rendering them useless for sale.

We have observed that the local bird population has dramatically increased over the last 4 years. The Bali Black Eagle makes it’s presence known by it’s distinctive call and can be seen regularly spiraling down the valley.

Listed below are some of the birds seen in our area.

Bali Starling – see below Black Bulbul Ashy Bulbul Java Kingfisher
Red Jungle Fowl Streak-Eared Bulbul Black Drongo Egret
Heron Crow Babblers Ibis

Bali Starling Breeding Program

A NEW ECO LODGE CONSERVATION PROGRAM

working with the Begawan Foundation

THE BALI STARLING

Bali Starlings, once common in Bali, are now one of the World’s rarest birds. The Bali Starling is the only endemic bird of Bali and is now now essentially extinct in the wild. There are several breeding programs initiated in Bali which have recently released starlings on a neighboring island, Nusa Penida, Only captive breeding programs have saved it from total extinction.

The most successful Bali Starling breeding program, is privately funded by the Gardner family, under the auspices of the Begawan Foundation. www.begawanfoundation.org

We have known the Gardners for many years, and recently, having watched the Eco Lodge develop and mature, they have given us a breeding pair to start our own program at the lodge.

The pair are happily building their nest and getting ready to breed.

You can observe our pair of Bali Starlings daily as they wash & preen themselves. They are very active with a lovely bird call.

Balinese Ceremony Balinese Ceremony Balinese Ceremony

There are many ceremonies in Bali occurring throughout the year. Every village temple there has a ceremony twice a year, usually on the full moon. There are also frequent ceremonies for new born babies, weddings, funerals, tooth filing, as well as the annual Hindu ceremonies for new year (Nyepi), Galungan and Kuningan. The local people at Sarinbuana welcome guests to join their ceremonies. Traditional costume can be supplied by the Eco lodge.

Meet the Locals and Try a Locally Grown Organic Coffee

Balinese Village Kids Balinese traditional cakes Balinese Women in the Village

Take a stroll down the road and meet our local farming community, depending on the time of year you might see, cocoa or coffee beans laid out in the sun to dry, or villagers planting rice, making palm sugar syrup or preparing for a ceremony. There are small shops called warungs which you are welcome to sit at and enjoy a local organic coffee or maybe some Balinese cakes.
